MARLBORO - BARBARA ELIZABETH (OROVETZ) PAPA, passed away peacefully on Sunday, October 3, 2021, at The Chelsea at Solana in Marlboro Twp. She was 90.
Barbara was born in the Bronx, attended Walton High School and graduated in 1948. As an only child, Barbara was shy. In her teenage years her father introduced her to a lively boisterous man who came from a large Italian family. After getting used to the large family and getting Italian cooking lessons from the matriarch, she married the love of her life, Jimmy Papa, on February 19, 1950 at Our Lady of Refuge, Bronx. They lived happily together for 37 years and had 6 children together, Frances, Marie, Vincent, Robert, Susan and Carol. She was proud to be a New Yorker and lived in the Bronx until 1985.
In 1985, Barbara moved to her adopted hometown of Lavallette, NJ. She loved living by the ocean, and was a regular attendant of St Padre Pio.
She was predeceased by her loving husband, Jimmy Papa, and her parents, John Orovetz and Elizabeth Madigan.
Barbara lived a full life, her best times were spent being with her 6 children, Frances Schuff, and late husband, Bob, Marie Sarcinella and husband, Andrew, Vincent, and fiancée, Star, Robert, and wife, Christina, Susan O'Brien and husband, Christopher, and Carol La Fronz and husband, Jack; her 15 grandchildren, Steven and Caroline Schuff, Natalie Hegewald and husband, Chris, AJ Sarcinella, Alex Papa, Laura Salome and husband, Jose, Lisa Selahowski and husband, Kyle, Robert Papa and wife, Jen, Nicholas Papa, Courtney Hirsch and husband, Brett, Jimmy O'Brien and wife, Kaitlyn, Elizabeth O'Brien and fiancé, Hunter Hendrick, Lucas O'Brien, Tyler and Jake La Fronz, and her 18 great-grandchildren, Koa, Reef, and Jett Schuff, Charles and Joshua Hegewald, Joey, Vanessa, Ryan and Michael Salome, Madison and Owen Selahowski, Andrew, Lucas, Elise, Colten and Elena Papa, and Ike and Edison Hirsch.
She loved to quilt, to travel, to cook and loved the NY Yankees. A devout Catholic, Barbara had a prayer list and would pray for anyone she knew who needed a little extra help. She enjoyed walking, yoga, and tai chi and loved her dogs, Patsy, Riley and Georgie.
Barbara was always available for her family, to cook them a meal, share a laugh, sew a button/hem a pant leg, listen to them. She attended most of her grandchildren's births, always lending a hand. She attended countless baseball games, soccer games, cheerleading competitions, hockey games, anything her children and grandchildren were involved in. She was a tea drinker, not coffee! Barbara was a joy to be around, and once you knew her, you loved her.
Private funeral services were entrusted to The BRUNSWICK MEMORIAL HOME, East Brunswick. A Memorial Mass, celebrating Barbara's life, will be held on Saturday, October 23, 2021, at 10:00 am, at St. Pio of Pietrelcina, 1100 Grand Central Avenue, Lavallette.
