Grace Jay had ebullient vitality and energy and was full of vim and vigor.
She was a great friend; I can still remember the day we met; she was referred to me from an acquaintance. I needed to hire a ticket agent for weekends only, and she fit that position perfectly. No one else could outperform her when it came to having spunk, the energy she had even though she was now working every day of the week. And let us not forget that the Carlyle Hotel was not around the corner from the Port Authority Bus Terminal, she had to get to the East side which meant several subways and walking many blocks.
She was fantastic at the ticket window, very friendly and a bit sassy when she had to be, working with the traveling public is not easy. It was hard to find a person who could open at 4:30am, but you could rest easy when she was scheduled to work. Not many people are awake at that hour, but she was there with her Dunkin Donut’s coffee and a cruller. She put in least 22 years or more with the bus company. She had many fans, no matter where we went someone knew her, and once it was 60 miles away.
She was there for me when I needed a place to live, I became her border for several years. She opened her home for me, and that opened a whole new family for me to enjoy. She always told me I was family.
So, rest in peace my dear Grace Jay, I will never forget you.
