MONROE TOWNSHIP - AMELIA MARIE (ZARRELLA) CUMELLA passed away on Friday, June 26, 2020, at her residence in Monroe Township. She was 90.
Born in Brooklyn, NY, Amelia (also known as "Emily") resided there, in Citrus Springs, FL, and in Staten Island, NY, before settling down in Monroe Township, NJ 9 years ago.
Emily was one of 12 children, the oldest girl, and her mother's great helper in taking care of the large family. She adored her mother and talked about her often and glowingly. She deeply loved her siblings, children, and grandchildren. Until dementia compromised her cognition, she had an amazing memory for the birth dates and anniversaries of everyone in her large Italian-American family, including nephews, nieces, and cousins. She marked each occasion with cards or gifts and was known to send out hundreds of cards to loved ones each year.
Prior to retiring in 1985, Emily worked for 39 years as a bank teller and clerk, although she was also a homemaker for 15 years to raise her children. She was always well-loved at her workplace and excelled in her jobs. Her greatest passions, however, involved home decorating and sewing. She adorned her homes with beauty and elegance and loved to make crafts and sew pillows and curtains. She was talented at dress-making and had a keen sense of fashion. She was a wonderful cook who mastered Southern Italian and American cuisine.
Emily was known by her family and friends as a kind, gentle, and warm soul who always found the best in each person, never judged, and offered validation for each person's interests. She rarely said anything unkind about another human being or group of human beings. She truly treated all people with dignity and equality.
Emily married her high school sweetheart, Eddie Cumella, whom she met at age 14. They were married for 67 years until Eddie's passing in 2018. Their love stood the test of time, sustained by life's beautiful blessings and growing through its challenges. Emily and Eddie were inseparable for the last 40 years of their lives together. They did everything together, side by side, and wished to pass away at the same time. Although that final wish did not materialize, they are now reunited, along with their many loved ones who have gone on before them.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward Cumella Sr., in 2018; her 4 brothers, John Zarrella, Anthony Zarrella, Salvatore Zarrella, and Dominick Zarrella, and her 3 sisters, Florence Cavaliere, Constance Rosenfield, and Phyllis Ferlito.
Surviving are her 2 sons, Charles Edward Cumella of Mesa, AZ, and Dr. Edward Cumella, and his wife, Sherrill, of Wickenburg, AZ; her daughter, Michele Tardo and her husband, Joseph, of Monroe Township; 3 brothers, Peter Zarrella of Staten Island, Joseph Zarrella of Staten Island, and Andrew Zarrella of Ocala, FL; her sister, Rosemary Jacob of Brooklyn, NY, and 3 grandchildren, Louis Tardo with his wife Kate Tardo, Thomas Tardo with his wife Giuliana Tardo, and Seth Montes with his partner Casey Cavanaugh.
Cremation will be private.
