Nagi Labib Awad, 67, of Hasbrouck Heights, NJ, passed away at 7:30 AM on March 17, 2020. Nagi was born on December 6, 1952 in El-Mahalla El-Kubra, Egypt. He completed training as a Civil Engineer in the College of Engineering at Alexandria University before immigrating to the United States of America in 1977 with "$43 dollars in his pocket". He worked his way through a second degree in Civil Engineering from the College of Engineering at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He then served the City of New York for over 30 years as a Civil Engineer, Associate Project Manager, and Administrative Project Manager, leading multiple capital projects. In 2001, following the 9/11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center, Nagi worked tirelessly on rescue, recovery, and cleanup efforts. In recent years, he helped manage recovery efforts following Hurricane Sandy. During this time, Nagi also owned and operated two local businesses in Jersey City, NJ: St. George's Deli and Restaurant (843 Bergen Avenue) and the Cyber Café & Phone Cards (841A Bergen Avenue). A rare man of strength and determination, Nagi feared nothing but God and loved his family dearly. He is greatly missed.
A viewing will be held on Friday, March 20 for extended hours from 2pm to 7pm at The Brunswick Memorial Home. The number of guests will be limited based on COVID-19 federal restrictions on public gatherings. On Saturday, a private funeral service will be held at St. Mary Coptic Orthodox Church, with entombment in the Chapel of the Blessed Virgin Mausoleum at Holy Cross Burial Park. A memorial service is planned for next year in anticipation of the lifting of current COVID-19 restrictions.
Nagi is survived by his wife of 36 years, Gina Awad; son, Dr. Louis Nagi Awad and his wife, Christina; son, Christopher Nagi Awad and his wife, Kathryn; son, Steven Nagi Awad and his wife, Melissa; grandchildren, Penelope Grace Awad, Michael Louis Awad, Catherine Grace Awad, Thomas Louis Awad, Mary Grace Awad, and Zachary Steven Awad; sister, Elizabeth Mansour; brother, Dr. Atallah Labib Atallah and his wife, Dr. Amal Atallah; sister, Louris Labib Atallah and her husband, Dr. Ezzat Riad; sister, Dr. Teresa Mina and her husband, George Mina; brother, Dr. David Abraham and his wife, Amany Abraham; and a multitude of nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews. He is preceded in death by his father, Labib Atallah Awad, mother, Ellen Dawoud, stepmother, Renee Awad, brother, Louis Labib Atallah, and brother-in-law, Nabil Mansour.
