MARY LOU (DZIUBECK) POPIELARSKI of Owego, NY, passed away on Wednesday, August 28, 2019, at Mercy House, Endicott, NY.

Born in New Brunswick, Mary Lou had resided in Highland Park, Spotswood, East Brunswick and East Windsor, NJ before moving to Owego, NY, in 2010.

Mary Lou received a Bachelor's and Master's Degree in Psychology from Rutgers University and dedicated the majority of her career to community-based mental health. She was employed by Catholic Charities in East Brunswick, Edison, NJ and Binghamton, NY. Other employers included Family Guidance in Trenton and Birmingham Clinic in Lawrence Township. Her primary focus at these agencies was providing therapy for children with socioeconomic disadvantages. Later in her career, Mary Lou obtained a post-graduate degree in Family Counseling from Rider University, which led to designations of Licensed Professional Counselor in NJ and Licensed Mental Health Counselor in NY. In both states, she successfully established her own private practice. Overall, she was a practicing Psychotherapist for over 30 years.

An avid traveler, Mary Lou visited 15 countries on 4 continents including Europe, Africa, Asia and North America. While fighting her disease and overcoming the side effects of chemotherapy, she actively sought other cultural experiences finding them in Innsbruck, Salzburg, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Barcelona, London and Avignon. One of her proudest moments was on a safari with her son, Daniel, in Uganda while he served two years in the Peace Corp.

Mary Lou was passionate for animal rights and donated monthly to the SPCA, Humane Society and PETA. She adopted her beloved pet Hanna, a mixed terrier breed, from a pet shelter in 2010.

Mary Lou had a light-hearted nature, a silly sense of humor and always brought a smile to the room. Surviving are her husband of 35 years, Thomas; her son, Daniel and his husband, Greg Smith, of Boston, MA; three brothers, Thomas Dziubeck, John Jack Dziubeck and his wife, Katie, and Charles Grover and his wife, Mary, and one sister, Sharon McGlynn.

A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 3, 2019, at 9:30 AM, at The BRUNSWICK MEMORIAL HOME, 454 Cranbury Road, East Brunswick, followed by a 10:15 AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Thomas the Apostle R.C.
