Healthy Grieving Choices

It’s not easy to pick up the pieces and slowly move on after losing someone you love. It’s important though that you realize you need to take care of yourself first…getting adequate sleep, taking care of your own health, eating right, surrounding yourself with people who care about you. Everyone grieves in their own way and in their own time – there’s no one “right” way. But there are some grieving choices that are healthy and apply to everyone.

Eat Right

It’s hard to think about yourself and your own nutritional needs during a hard time, but you need energy and fuel for your body. You can’t run a vehicle on an empty gas tank and you’ll only feel worse if you are on “empty” yourself. While you may not always feel hungry, or even be able to eat at all, your body needs nutrition; eat healthy items that will fuel your body in the right ways. Try to eat small amounts at regular intervals so you can get the energy you need. Drink lots of water to keep yourself well hydrated. Your tears and emotions are going to be draining and the right food and nutrition are essential.

Rest As Needed

If you’re feeling depressed, it might feel like you are tired and completely drained of your energy all of the time. Pushing yourself too hard isn’t going to help. You need to rest and get sleep on a regular basis. That might mean as much as you can at night and some naps during the day, for now. Don’t let social obligations and family members take over your time and keep you up and about when you need to rest. Everyone understands that those in grief need their time apart from others to rest.

Talk When You Can

Everyone needs a differing amounts of social interraction when they are grieving, but it’s always good for you to talk about your loved one, hard as that might be at times. Meet with friends or family members who can act as sounding boards and simply talk about the situation or your loved one and some special memories you hold. This can be very therapeutic and it can make you feel better to bring up happy times and remember that they led a good life while they were with you.
