EAST BRUNSWICK - JOSEPH "POP" DeFILIPPO died Tuesday, October 3, 2017, at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital, New Brunswick, surrounded by his family. He was 83.
Prior to retiring he was a Sergeant for the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, East Brunswick, where he worked for over 30 years. After retiring he worked part time as a Sergeant of Arms in Trenton, NJ.

A U.S. Army veteran, Pop served as a medic during the Korean War from 1953-1956. He was a member of Memorial Post #133, VFW, East Brunswick, the Italian American Club, and was a Golden Gloves boxer back in the day.

Pop had a passion for coaching boys and girls softball. He was an avid Yankee and Giants fan. He loved his dog, Cuddles, Frankie Valli and Elvis. His happiest times however, were when he was surrounded by his family. He knew everyone and everyone knew him as "Pop". He had an impact and touched everyone's lives in some small way. Everyone has a story about him.

You may remember Pop from East Brunswick channel three giving his political opinions on which he was very passionate about. He was an avid Yankee and Giants fan and loved his dog, Cuddles. Pop had a passion for coaching boys little league baseball, girls softball and women's volleyball. His happiest times however, were when he was surrounded by his family. Pop touched everyone's life in some small way and everyone has a story of their own to remember him by.

Surviving are his wife of 60 years, Dolores Schmidt DeFilippo; 2 sons, Steven and his loving partner, Julie Welsh, of East Brunswick, and Joseph and his wife, Michele, of South River; a daughter, Susan A. Gambino and her husband, Thomas, of East Brunswick, a sister, Florence Ricinti of Florida, and 6 grandchildren, Michelle Baiera and her loving partner, Michaela Williamson, Summer DeFilippo, Thomas and Vincent Gambino, and Nicholas and Steven Jr. DeFilippo, and many nieces and nephews.

In honor of Pop's wishes, he asked that there be no service. Funeral arrangements were entrusted to Brunswick Memorial Home. Cremation was private.
